Target Customers Launch Campaign Against 'Disrespectful' Ads

More than 6,000 protesters are demanding that the megastore apologize to "Annie" actress Quvenzhané Wallis for seemingly choosing a young white model over her.

A new online petition called out Target for what protesters believe to be the blatant disrespect of a young African-American actress.

Organizer L’Sean Rinique Shelton and 6,660-plus supporters are demanding that Target remove the in-store ads for its Annie-inspired children’s clothing collection. Instead of featuring the movie’s star Quvenzhané Wallis or a wide range of models of color (as the advertisement's lookbook does), the in-store ads appear to only feature a white model. 

"Although Annie is a fictitious character, there has been a major uproar from protesters stating that they would not support the movie due to the star being African American,” wrote Shelton in the Change.org petition. "Is the reason why Target maliciously hid Wallis or refused to use an African American girl to depict Annie in their ads?"

Shelton noted that “everything” about the original Annie film centered on Aileen Quinn or "a character/person that emulated her.” She also urged Target to show more diversity within its stores and depict a range of races as it did in its online ads.

"If you can show it online, show it in all of your stores with multiple signage with different girls not one!” wrote Shelton.

"It would also be proper for you to apologize to Quvenzhané Wallis  — that was utterly disrespectful.”
