Obama to Delay Withdrawal of Troops From Afghanistan

President Obama has announced that there will be a delay in withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Additionally, troops have been deployed to Cameroon.

President Obama announced Thursday that there will be a delay in withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. A total of 5,500 U.S. troops will remain there in 2017, when Obama leaves office.

POTUS originally promised to pull troops out of the country before the end of his presidency. But military advisers said he should wait and reported that Afghans still need support from troops against the Taliban, the AP reports.
"We cannot separate the importance of governance from the importance of security," Obama said.

Additionally, troops have been deployed to Cameroon to help fight Boko Haram, the violent extremist group.
"It will be part of a broader regional effort to stop the spread of Boko Haram and other violent extremist organizations in West Africa," press secretary Josh Earnest said.
There were 90 troops sent this week and a total of 300 are expected to be sent to the country. Haram's attacks have plagued the region with kidnapping of women and girls and the killing of an estimated 1.5 million people, the AP reports.
