3-Year-Old Xavier Mokarzel-Satchel Violently Beaten to Death by His Mother's Girlfriend and Her Mother

The toddler's father said he was a "ball of sunshine."

A child from Pine Hills, Florida, died as the result of a brutal beating at the hands of his mother’s partner and her partner’s mother on Friday.

Three-year-old Xavier Mokarzel-Satchel was beaten with a plastic wand inside a Pine Hills apartment by Lakesha Lewis (pictured, left) and her mother, Callene Barton (pictured, right). Both women are facing first-degree felony murder and aggravated child abuse charges while Xavier’s mother, Brandi Mokarzel (pictured, center), is charged with neglect of a child, reported the Orlando-Sentinel.

Xavier’s father, Jaquan Satchel, who lives in Spokane, Wash., said he hadn’t seen his son in two years. Satchel, 27, dated Mokarzel for about four years before they separated and she moved away.

“The kid was a ball of sunshine,” Satchel told the Sentinel. “Every day was amazing. I got to joke and laugh with him.”

On the day of Xavier’s death, Mokarzel was awakened to the sound of Barton yelling at the toddler for drinking milk from a jug and eating yogurt, according to a sheriff’s office arrest report.

Lewis, 28, then grabbed the wand used to operate blinds, and beat Xavier until the plastic piece broke. Mokarzel grabbed her son and ran back to her bedroom, but Barton came after them, grabbed Xavier by his arm and leg and tossed him down the hallway.

According to arrest records, Xavier began to shake like he was having a seizure. Barton, 58, and Lewis tried to revive him by splashing water on his face.

When Mokarzel tried to call the police, Barton knocked the phone from her hand and said she would “end” Mokarzel. Barton reportedly didn’t want to lose another child to Child Protective Services.

Mokarzel, 23, ran to a neighbor’s unit for help and when she returned, Xavier was on his back with food coming from his nose, the report states.

Deputies arrived at the apartment just after noon Friday and found Xavier barely breathing. He was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children where he was pronounced dead at 4:35 p.m. Doctors said Xavier had bruises that were healing, which are signs of past abuse. Mokarzel admitted to investigators that the boy had been hit by the women before.

Lewis’s 4-year-old son was also living in the apartment and was placed in custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families, deputies said. Court records show Barton pleaded guilty in 2010 to a child abuse charge in Orange County. She was sentenced to two days in jail and a year of probation.

Barton and Lewis are in Orange County Jail held without bond, while Mokarzel is also jailed on $2,500 bond.
