Conservatives Play Race Card to Defend Herman Cain

Conservatives say mainstream media racism is fueling the story about sexual harassment allegations made against Herman Cain.

Herman Cain’s presidential campaign may need to learn a thing or two about spin control, but it does know how to spin a scandal into campaign gold. The day after news broke that Cain faced allegations of sexual harassment when he was the top executive at the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, the campaign had its best online fundraising day yet, pulling in $250,000.

“Yesterday, with the firestorm, was one of our best fund-raising days online since the campaign started,” Cain told radio host Laura Ingraham during a Tuesday morning interview.

It is in part because conservatives have fiercely rallied around Cain, throwing down a whole deck of race cards in the process.

Social and political pundit Ann Coulter on Monday likened the “liberal mainstream media’s” coverage of the story to a “high-tech lynching” of Cain and said that conservative Blacks are better than liberal ones.

“Our Blacks are so much better than their Blacks,” she said. “To become a Black Republican, you don’t just roll into it. You’re not going with the flow,” she told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “You have fought against probably your family members, probably your neighbors, you have thought everything out and that’s why we have very impressive Blacks in our party.”

On Tuesday she double-downed on the remarks, telling HLN host Joy Behar that “a conservative Black is a massive threat to the entire liberal establishment and this is a smart powerful Black,” referring to Cain. “The only racism you hear in America is against conservative Blacks,” she added.

“In the eyes of the liberal media, Herman Cain is just another uppity Black American who has had the audacity to leave the liberal plantation. So they must destroy him, just as they tried destroying Clarence Thomas,” wrote Media Research Center president Brent Bozell in a blog.

Radio host Rush Limbaugh seconded the sentiment on his Monday show.

“It really is about Blacks and Hispanics getting too uppity. That's what this is. You don't achieve in American politics as a Republican, as a self-reliant individual or conservative. You don't do it,” he said. “You try it and [the mainstream liberal media is] going to destroy you,” Limbaugh said.
