Cory Booker Sets the Date for His Food Stamp Diet

Newark Mayor Cory Booker will dine on $1.40 per meal for one week.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker is all set to begin his food stamp challenge next week, from Dec. 4-11. Too bad he didn't let the Twitter follower who agreed to join him on the approximately $5-per-day diet know of his plans.

The North Carolina woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because she's received threats, said that the mayor sent a tweet to let her know his staff would be in contact, but she's not heard a word from his office.

"I don't think it's fair to be challenged and just find out from the Internet when I'm supposed to take part," she told the newswire. "I would have appreciated the consideration that I have a life as well."

The woman, who posts as @MWadeNC, said that she plans to participate in the challenge but has not yet decided when.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average monthly food stamp benefit in New Jersey is $133.26 per person. Booker said his daily food budget will be $1.40 per meal.

Booker also said he will be announcing a celebrity who will be participating in the challenge, which his original challenger cheered.

"I think everybody should do this," she said.
