Americans also blame Congress for not preventing automatic federal spending cuts.
The sky didn't fall when the sequester (automatic, across-the-board federal spending cuts) went into effect at midnight on March 1, but President Obama's job approval rating did.
The president's approval rating fell to its lowest level in the Gallup three-day tracking poll for the period between Feb. 29 and March 2, from 53 percent to 46 percent, and the lowest since his re-election. His disapproval rating also hit 46 percent, up from 40 percent the week before.
The dip came after Obama and congressional leaders failed to reach a deal that would prevent triggering the sequester. But he's not shouldering all of the blame. According to a CBS News poll published March 4, 38 percent of Americans place more blame on Republicans compared to 33 percent who blame Obama.
