Venus and Serena Win Doubles Olympic Gold
Venus and Serena Williams won the gold medal in women's doubles Sunday at the London Olympics, beating Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4.
This is the third women's double gold for the Williams sisters, who won the gold in doubles in 2000 and 2008. Venus also won the gold in singles in 2000.
Saturday, Serena beat Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1, in a very lopsided match to win her first singles gold. Venus won singles gold in the 2000 games. Serena joins Steffi Graf as the only women to complete the Golden Slam — winning the Olympics and the four majors, according to the Associated Press. And older sister Venus joins Conchita Martinez of Spain as the only tennis players to win medals at three different Olympics, writes AP.
A well-deserved congratulations to the record-breaking Williams sisters.
