The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is a pet owner again, five years after serving time for running an illegal dog fighting ring.
Michael Vick is a dog owner once again.
The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback confirmed that his family owns a dog and said the "pet is well cared for."
"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet. As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals," Vick said. "I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God's creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change."
There have been criticisms over the football star's decision to get a dog due to his previous felony charges for running an illegal dog fighting ring. He served 19 months in jail and three years on probation.
Questions first arose last week when Vick tweeted a photo of him sitting at the table with his daughter. At the table was a box of Milk-Bone dog treats, but the photo was quickly taken down and replaced with the same shot. In the second photo, the treats were cropped out of the image.
When asked if he owned a dog after practice this week, Vick refused to answer the question, but in past interviews he mentioned wanting to own a dog again.
