John Wendell Thompson is the chief executive officer of the privately held Virtual Instruments and the Chairman of Microsoft Corporation. He currently serves in this role with PernixData, Liquid Robotics, ReviverMX and Illumio. Prior to this, he was the vice president of IBM and the CEO of Symantec Corporation. Before assuming his current role, Thompson served in various senior leadership positions, including general manager of IBM Americas. In addition to his professional achievements, Thompson has been recognized for his work by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, the Silicon Valley Education Foundation and Junior Achievement. He was also awarded the David Packard Medal of Achievement from TeachAmerica Foundation for his contributions to the high-tech industry and has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Notre Dame, Mendoza College of Business and Florida A&M.
