The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

The hit NBC series that launched Will Smith’s blockbuster acting career premiered in September 1990 and ran for six seasons. The show, set in California, was based on a fictionalized version of Smith as a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia who is sent to live with his Aunt Viv (Janet Hubert and Daphne Reid) and Uncle Phil (James Avery), a judge, in their wealthy Bel Air mansion. The hilarious antics of culture clashes and class divides between Will and his cousins Carlton (Alfonso Ribiero), Ashley (Tatyana Ali) and Hillary (Karyn Parsons), best friend Jazz (DJ Jazzy Jeff) and butler Geoffrey (Joseph Marcell) made the show an unforgettable hit and earned the cast Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. The show also regularly included standout guest stars, like Queen Latifah, Tevin Campbell, Tyra Banks, Nia Long and Oprah Winfrey.
