NFL Week 3: Winners, Losers, and Crazy Finishes
Week 3 of the NFL season delivered a stunning display of chaos, with multiple games decided by wild special teams plays and dramatic last-minute comebacks. To bring you up to speed, here is The Scoreboard’s top storylines of Week 3.
Caleb Williams Silences The Haters
So far this season, no one has been under more scrutiny than Caleb Williams. But against the Dallas Cowboys, the Chicago Bears' starting QB showed why he was the number one pick of the 2024, leading them to a dominant 31-14 victory. In his best game as a pro, he threw for 298 yards and a career-high four touchdowns and looked in complete control of new head coach Ben Johnson's offense. One of the TDs was a 65-yard flea-flicker touchdown to Luther Burden. For the first time in his NFL career, Williams was not sacked, thanks to improvements on the Bears' offensive line. If Williams keeps this up, he will be among the next crop of elite QBs.
The Cleveland Browns Stun The Green Bay Packers
In a week of surprising wins, the Cleveland Browns' 13-10 victory of the Green Bay Packers may have been the most shocking. The Browns rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final four minutes of the game. Shelby Harris blocked a potential game-winning field goal for the Packers which led to Andre Szmyt kicking a 55-yard field goal to seal the improbable comeback. The win ended an eight-game losing streak for the Browns dating back to last season.
The Super Bowl Champs Keep Rolling
All the Philadelphia Eagles do is win. In week 3, the defending Super Bowl champions pulled off a stunning comeback over the Los Angeles Rams, 33-26. The Eagles blocked two field goals in a single game for the first time since Sept. 21, 1975, against the New York Giants, exactly 50 years later. With three seconds left in the game, Defensive tackle Jordan Davis blocked a 44-yard Joshua Karty attempt and ran 61 yards for the game-sealing touchdown. Jalen Hurts threw for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns. A.J. Brown had a breakout game with 6 receptions for 109 yards and a TD. For the Rams, Matthew Stafford threw for 196 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. The Philadelphia Eagles are now 3-0 and look like the favorites to get back to the Super Bowl.
Jonathan Taylor Is an Early MVP Candidate
We know it’s mad early, but Jonathan Taylor should be in the MVP discussion. He’s off to a fast start to the season, putting up another impressive game, leading the Indianapolis Colts to a win over the Tennessee Titans. He rushed for 102 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns. Taylor is also leading the NFL in rushing yards. More than empty stats, Taylor's exploits with the ball have the Colts sitting at 3-0, surprising most NFL pundits.
The Lions and Ravens Have a Monday Night Shoutout
In a highly anticipated “Monday Night Football" matchup, the Detroit Lions defeated the Baltimore Ravens 38-30. The Lions' win was largely a result of their dominant running game. David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs combined for 218 rushing yards and four touchdowns, as the Lions dominated the line of scrimmage. Once again, Ravens running back Derrick Henry fumbled, which led to a Lions field goal. On the defensive side, the Lions sacked Lamar Jackson seven times. The Lions moved to 2-1 and the Ravens fell to 1-2.
