Charles Barkley Has Zero Apologies for What He Said About Disciplining Kids
Charles Barkley said what he said, and he meant every word.
The NBA legend, 63, stopped by "The Dan Patrick Show" on Monday, March 23, and wasted absolutely no time getting into it. What started as a conversation about player power in today's NBA quickly turned into Barkley delivering an unfiltered sermon on parenting, discipline, and why he couldn't care less about the backlash coming his way.
"The players have so much power now. It's crazy," Barkley said. "You can't even yell at them anymore. When you yell at somebody when they do something wrong, that's called being a coach."
And then he took it home.
"People talk about, 'You can't yell at your kids.' Yes hell you can yell at your kids. You whoop their ass too."
Host Dan Patrick, 69, tried to pump the brakes, telling Barkley, "I don't think you're allowed to do that. I don't think you can whoop ass anymore."
Barkley wasn't moved. "Yes, you can. That's why these kids are crazy."
For anyone who grew up in a household where a look from your grandmother could stop you dead in your tracks, Barkley's energy here is deeply familiar. He even pulled out a personal story to back it up, recalling how his grandmother would get creative with her discipline tools.
"One year I made the mistake of getting those Hot Wheels racetracks," he said, laughing. "Man, that was one of the worst decisions ever. Kids, never get those Hot Wheels racetracks."
Patrick admitted he loved Hot Wheels as a kid. Barkley's response? "I did too, until it became a weapon."
To be clear, Barkley wasn't calling for anything extreme. He drew a hard line between discipline and abuse.
"I'm not going around telling people to beat their kids," he said. "But I think if you don't spank your kids and discipline them, they turn into some of these brats that we got today. I'm not here for child abuse. But how are kids going to know they're doing something wrong?"
He kept going, and honestly, a lot of people's aunties would co-sign every word.
"First of all, you can't rationalize with kids. They're dumber than rocks. They don't know they're doing stuff wrong. But when you spank 'em, that gets the message across because they don't want that."
Barkley already knew the internet was going to have something to say. He just doesn't care.
"You can blast me on social media. You guys know I don't do social media," he said. "I don't ever read any comments. I don't care what y'all think. Y'all can kiss my big Black a--."
He added: "I'm gonna say what I gotta say. Some of y'all gonna like it. Some of y'all are not. And y'all will get over it."
