Simone Biles Reveals Why Her 2028 Olympic Status Is Still A Coinflip

The most decorated gymnast in history is weighing the mental and physical toll of returning to the global stage for a fourth time.

Simone Biles remains undecided about her potential participation in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, citing mental health as the primary factor in her decision-making process.

In a recent interview with CNN Sports at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, the 11-time Olympic medalist characterized the odds of her return as "50-50." With the 2026 season approaching, Biles acknowledged that the window for a firm commitment is narrowing.

The 29-year-old gymnast is currently on a hiatus to prioritize physical recovery. While she plans to incorporate low-impact activities like Pilates and yoga into her routine, she emphasized that her physical readiness is not the main hurdle.

Biles told CNN Sports that while her coaches can ensure she is physically prepared for a fourth Olympic appearance, the mental toll of the sport requires a different level of dedication. She noted that the path to elite competition is long and demanding, requiring significant psychological resilience.

Since the Tokyo Olympics, Biles has been a prominent advocate for mental health awareness. During those games, she withdrew from several events after experiencing "the twisties," a dangerous phenomenon where a gymnast loses their spatial awareness mid-air. Reflecting on that period, Biles described it as a turning point that allowed the world to see her as a human being rather than a machine.

Biles continues to attend therapy and credits her support system with helping her navigate the pressure of global scrutiny. She noted that seeing other professional athletes, such as Naomi Osaka and Kevin Love, speak about their struggles gave her the courage to do the same.
