Former Super Bowl Champion Charged with Murder of Girlfriend
While NFL legends past and present celebrated the Super Bowl in San Francisco this past weekend, another former Super Bowl winner was at the center of a tragic tale of alleged intimate partner violence.
Darron Lee, who played linebacker for the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, and Buffalo Bills between 2016 and 2020, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of a woman identified as his girlfriend, according to reports in multiple outlets. The woman’s name was not released.
The New York Daily News reported that Lee was arrested last Thursday after deputies were called to a residence in Ooltewah, Tenn., near Chattanooga, where first responders were performing CPR on the woman. The woman died, and it was later ruled that her death was a homicide.
Lee, according to police reports, was present at the time and told law enforcement that the woman had been unconscious on a couch, possibly as a result of a fall in the shower. But, as local ABC-affiliate WTVC reported, an affidavit in the case says the scene inside the house “raised concerns,” with broken glass and blood present and no indication of forced entry. Lee, the report says, also had injuries consistent with a physical struggle, and there were several other suspicious details, including the “unusual” location of cleaning supplies, broken glass in the kitchen, blood inside of Lee’s cell phone case, drugs, and a gun inside the house.
The deceased was later found to have bruises on her body, a bite mark, and what appeared to be a stab wound.
Lee was a 2016 first-round pick of the Jets who selected him 20th overall out of Ohio State. He played a total of 58 games and racked up 264 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions, and a touchdown in a career during which he earned $18.3 million, according to Spotrac. He’s among the few players who have won both a College Football National Championship, which he won with Ohio State in 2014, and a Super Bowl, which the Chiefs won in 2019, his only season with the team.
