Chaka Khan: Clive Davis Should Have Canceled His Party

Chaka Khan calls pre-Grammy party following the death of Whitney Houston "insanity."

Many people were shocked at Clive Davis's decision to continue on with his annual pre-Grammy party despite Whitney Houston's death. Chaka Khan is among those that disagreed with the choice to party on, but she's one of the first celebrities to speak out.

In an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan last night (February 13), the legendary soul singer shared that she felt the party should have been canceled.

"I thought that was complete insanity. And knowing Whitney I don't believe that she would have said 'the show must go on.' She's the kind of woman that would've said 'Stop everything! Un-unh. I'm not going to be there."
As previously reported, Houston was found dead at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on February 11. An emergency call was made from the singer's hotel room at 3:43 PM PST. Life-saving resuscitation measures were attempted, but were unsuccessful. Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55 PM.
The unfortunate incident happened just hours before she was to attend Clive Davis's annual bash in another area of the hotel. Davis opted to continue on with the party and turn it into a tribute for Houston despite the fact that a police investigation was still being conducted in Whitney's hotel room and her body had yet to be removed.
"I don't know what could motivate a person to have a party in a building where the person whose life he had influenced so enormously and whose life had been affected by hers," said Khan. "They were like… I don't understand how that party went on."
Morgan described the scene of the party as "surreal" with one half of the people in attendance crying and the other half partying. However, Davis wanted to do something in tribute of Houston because, as he said, that's what she would have wanted. "Simply put, Whitney would have wanted that we go on and her family asked that we carry on,” Davis said, before asking the audience to join him in a moment of silence honoring Houston.
Davis also expressed his condolences to Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, and the “extended family who loved and cherished her and her spirit.”
