Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe Move On at the US Open

Both players are looking to be the first American man to win the trophy since 2003.

Ben Shelton and Francis Tiafoe are both headed to the third round in the US Open with strong performances on Wednesday (August 27).

On Day four of the tournament, Shelton showcased his dominance with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win over Pablo Carreno Busta at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Now ranked No. 5 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, Shelton moved to within 95 points of No. 4 Fritz in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin. Following the match, Shelton spoke about his performance.

"I feel like I played well and I was happy with how I played the big points," Shelton said. "It was an electric atmosphere. This is the one tournament that is all about the fans and their energy and passion for the sport."

In the third round, Shelton will take on French veteran Adrian Mannarino on Friday, August 29.

Not to be outdone, Tiafoe took down Martin Damm,  6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 7-5, in an impressive win on Wednesday afternoon in the Grandstand.

“I haven’t played many matches where I haven’t been broken for four straight sets and still could’ve easily been in a fifth,” Tiafoe said after the match. “A testament to him. He battled incredibly well.”

“Ultimately, when the opportunity comes, you got to take it,” Tiafoe said. “You can’t be wishful. You gotta be brave, you gotta be courageous. There are no free lunches out here, no easy gifts. You have to take it when it’s there. You can’t win the tournament in the second round, but you sure can lose it, so wins like today are massive.”

Next up for Tiafoe is Jan-Lennard Struff, who he’ll face on Friday.
