Stephen A. Smith Warns Gilbert Arenas to Take Gambling Charges Seriously
Stephen A. Smith has called out Gilbert Arenas for not taking a recent arrest for his alleged involvement in an illegal gambling ring more seriously.
On the latest episode of The Stephen A. Smith Show, Smith responded to a clip of Arenas joking about sports commentators getting in trouble with the law after being around the First Take host.
"Bro, I need you not to play around," Smith began. "My brother, I do not want to see you in jail at all. It’s not a good look. It’s nothing to laugh about. It’s nothing to joke about when the feds come raiding your home."
"I don’t want to see that," Smith continued. "I can assure you that anybody who wants to do business with you, I’m one of those people, ESPN, Underdog, a whole bunch of sponsors and advertisers, we don't want to see that."
Smith went on to describe Arenas as a "special talent" and referred to Arenas and his Washington Wizards teammate Javaris Crittenton’s gun incident in the team’s locker room in 2009.
"What really exacerbated the situation was that you had a game a night or two later, and you were joking and fading, acting like you were shooting guns during the introductions or when the warm-ups were taking place," Smith recalled. "(NBA Commissioner) David Stern went ballistic."
“It’s not a joking matter to other people," he continued. “And the reality is that, my brother, it shouldn’t be a joking matter to you."
On July 30, Arenas and five others, including Yevgeni Gershman, a suspected high-level Israeli crime figure, were arrested and charged with three felony counts and arraigned Wednesday afternoon in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.”
Per the indictment filed by the federal prosecution team, Arenas is accused of running an illegal gambling ring from September 2021 through July 2022. The filing states that Arenas hosted games at his mansion in Encino, Calif., and was paid rent through an intermediary. Gershman, and four others, hosted games of various poker variants like “pot-limit Omaha.”
During a recent stream on his YouTube channel following his arrest, Arenas said that he would be “snitching” to stay out of jail if possible and took shots at former NBA player Kwame Brown.
"Good luck in court. I'm pretty sure I ain't gonna be there when it's starting to go, cause, yeah, I'm snitching," Arenas said.
