Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the former Buccaneers running back, who reportedly became unresponsive following an incident in Oakland.

Doug Martin, a former All-Pro running back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has passed away. He was 36.

Martin’s family confirmed his sudden passing in a statement.

"It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time," his family said in a statement to Fox Sports.

The Buccaneers paid tribute to Martin in a post on social media.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. ... Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise."

According to local Fox news station KTVU, Martin died in a hospital after he became unresponsive following his arrest by the Oakland Police Department, who were responding to reports of a possible break-in, and that the suspected burglar was having “a medical emergency.” When officers attempted to detain Martin, he allegedly briefly resisted.

Eventually, OPD officers apprehended Martin, who became unresponsive and was taken by paramedics to a hospital. While in police custody, Martin suffered an unspecified medical emergency.

The nature of the emergency has not been disclosed.

The OPD said its “Homicide Section and Internal Affairs Bureau, as well as the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will be conducting an investigation into his death.”

The officers who were involved in the fatal incident were placed on paid administrative leave.

Martin was one of the greatest players in the Boise State University football program. He rushed for 3,431 yards from 2007 through 2011, placing him eighth on the school’s all-time rushing list. With 43 career rushing touchdowns, Martin is sixth all-time.

After being selected at No. 31 overall by the Buccaneers, Martin had an incredible rookie season. He rushed for 1,454 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. He was named to the Pro Bowl team and the NFL All-Rookie Team. Overall, Martin finished his career with 5,356 rushing yards and 30 rushing touchdowns, along with 1,207 receiving yards, and was honored as one of the Buccaneers' Top 50 players of all time.
