Philly Linebacker Nolan Smith Locked Up For Going Double The Speed Limit

The 25-year-old faces misdemeanor charges of speeding and reckless driving in his home state.

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nolan Smith Jr. was arrested Friday night after authorities in Georgia clocked his vehicle traveling nearly double the posted speed limit.

The Twiggs County Sheriff's Office told ESPN that Smith was pulled over on the interstate at 10:41 p.m. Deputies recorded his speed at 135 mph in an area where the speed limit is 70 mph. The 25-year-old linebacker faces misdemeanor charges of speeding and reckless driving.

According to law enforcement officials, Smith was taken into custody without incident, booked into the local jail, and released about an hour later after posting bond.

A court appearance has been scheduled for July 14 in Twiggs County. However, sheriff's office representatives indicated that Smith will not be required to appear in person if he pays the fines associated with the traffic citations before the court date. The arrest was initially reported by The Georgia Gazette.

The news comes just days before Philadelphia is scheduled to begin its organized team activities on Tuesday. Smith is entering his fourth year with the franchise and has established himself as a key piece of the defense.

Philadelphia selected Smith in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft out of the University of Georgia. His arrival in Philadelphia reunited him with several former college teammates from the Bulldogs' championship defense, including Jalen Carter, Nakobe Dean, and Jordan Davis.

After playing a rotational role early in his career, Smith put together a strong performance during the 2024 campaign. He recorded 6.5 sacks during the regular season and added another four sacks in the postseason, helping fuel the Eagles' run to the Super Bowl. Over his three seasons in the league, Smith has accumulated 10.5 sacks, 25 quarterback hits, and 10 tackles for loss.

Neither Smith's representatives nor the Eagles organization has issued an official statement regarding the arrest or his status for the upcoming team workouts.
