Sha’Carri Richardson and Christian Coleman Taken into Custody Following Florida Traffic Stop
Sha’Carri Richardson, a multi-time Olympic medalist, was arrested Thursday in Orange County, Fla., after law enforcement officials clocked her vehicle at 104 mph. The 25-year-old sprinter was booked into the Orange County Jail on a charge of dangerous excessive speeding, which applies to motorists traveling at 100 mph or more.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported that a traffic enforcement deputy observed a gray Aston Martin traveling at high speeds on State Road 429 near Stoneybrook Parkway around noon. In addition to the speed recorded via radar, deputies alleged that the driver, identified as Richardson, was dangerously tailgating and weaving across lanes to pass other motorists. Bond for the track star was set at $500, and she was later released.
TMZ Sports was the first to report and obtained the arrest affidavit, which revealed that Richardson was not the only athlete detained during the incident. Her boyfriend, fellow Olympic sprinter Christian Coleman, was also arrested at the scene. According to the affidavit, while deputies were conducting the traffic stop, a black Jeep pulled up in front of the Aston Martin. Coleman exited the vehicle and approached the officer to inquire about the situation.
The report states that when asked to identify himself, Coleman refused to provide his name.. He was subsequently arrested for resisting an officer without violence. During a search of his vehicle, authorities discovered a "glass smoking device" in the center console. The affidavit noted that the device appeared to have been cleaned but contained a small amount of green, leafy material suspected to be cannabis. Coleman was booked on charges of resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.
This marks the latest legal hurdle for Richardson, who won gold in the 4x100-meter relay and silver in the 100 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In August 2025, she was arrested at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport following a verbal and physical altercation with Coleman. Richardson later issued a public apology for that incident. Additionally, she famously missed the Tokyo Games in 2021 after testing positive for THC.
Under Florida’s "super speeder" law, which went into effect July 1, 2025, driving over 100 mph can result in up to 30 days in jail for a first conviction. Representatives for Richardson and USA Track and Field have not yet released statements regarding the arrests.
