Why The Eagles Drafted A Nigerian Who Has Never Played Football
The Philadelphia Eagles closed out the 2026 NFL Draft by taking a flyer on a prospect with zero experience in organized football. With the 251st overall pick in the seventh round, the franchise selected Uar Bernard, a defensive tackle from Nigeria, discovered through the league's international developmental channels.
Standing 6 feet, 4 inches and weighing 306 pounds, Bernard possesses a physical profile that caught the attention of scouts long before he ever put on a helmet. Despite his massive frame, he maintains 6% body fat and displayed elite athleticism during the HBCU Showcase and International Player Pathway Pro Day in March. There, he clocked a 4.63-second 40-yard dash and recorded a 39-inch vertical jump.
Bernard was first identified as a teenager while playing basketball. His transition to the gridiron began when he was invited to the 2024 NFL Nigeria camp by Osi Umenyiora, a former defensive end for the New York Giants. Over the next three years, Bernard participated in various football camps across Africa before being selected for the NFL International Player Pathway program class of 2026.
"It’s a dream come true for me because I’ve worked hard for this," Bernard said during a press conference following his selection. "I’ve not played football, but I’ve gone through some drills that made me believe that I’m going to get better every day."
The move mirrors the path of Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, an Australian former rugby player whom the team drafted in the seventh round in 2018. Mailata eventually developed into a starter and one of the league's most respected linemen.
Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman acknowledged that while Bernard is a "passion project" with a long developmental road ahead, the team was enamored by his physical tools. Roseman noted that defensive line coach Clint Hurtt traveled to evaluate the prospect personally before the draft.
