LaMelo Ball Under Fire For Controversial Trip Despite Game-Winning Heroics
LaMelo Ball may have provided the late-game fireworks to keep the Charlotte Hornets’ season alive, but his game-winning performance is being overshadowed by a controversial collision that left the Miami Heat without their defensive anchor. In a 127-126 overtime thriller on Tuesday night, Ball’s clutch bucket secured the win, yet the focus remains on a sequence that Heat coach Erik Spoelstra believes should have resulted in an ejection.
The drama unfolded early in the second quarter when Ball fell to the hardwood following a blocked shot. As Bam Adebayo jumped to secure the rebound, Ball reached out and grabbed the center’s left foot, sending him crashing to the floor. Adebayo was visibly shaken and eventually left the game with a lower back injury, leaving a massive void in the Miami lineup for the remainder of the contest.
Spoelstra didn't hold back when discussing the officiating crew of Zach Zarba, Curtis Blair, and Gediminas Petraitis. The Miami coach argued that the trip was clear and that Ball should have been tossed from the game immediately. According to Spoelstra, there is no room for that type of contact, especially when it results in a star player being forced to the locker room during a postseason atmosphere.
The officials later explained that because no whistle was blown during the actual live play, the rules prevented them from reviewing the contact after the fact. Zarba noted that the window for a review closes once play continues and a change of possession occurs.
Ball finished with 30 points, including the decisive layup with 4.7 seconds left in the extra period. After the buzzer, he offered an apology to Adebayo, claiming he was disoriented after taking a hit to his own head just moments before the incident. He maintained that the trip was not intentional and expressed his intent to check on his peer's recovery.
While Charlotte prepares to face the loser of the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic matchup, the Heat are left to wonder how the night might have ended had their All-Star center remained on the court.
