Did He Go Too Far? Shilo Sanders Faces Heat After Viral Comment

Sanders isn't backing down from his criticism of how the media views his brother's role in the Cleveland offense.

Shilo Sanders is facing backlash after directing a disparaging comment toward a veteran journalist following her assessment of the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback situation.

The controversy began when the Cleveland.com Instagram account shared a video featuring longtime beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot. In the clip, Cabot expressed her belief that Deshaun Watson should be named the team’s starting quarterback over Shedeur Sanders, who is entering his second season with the franchise. Shilo Sanders, the older brother of the Browns quarterback, responded to the post by writing, "Go make a sandwich Mary."

The remark, widely criticized as sexist, drew a response from Cabot during an appearance on Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan on Thursday morning. Cabot, the recipient of the 2025 Bill Nunn Memorial Award, chose to focus on her professional impact rather than the insult itself.

"I really do believe that I have been an inspiration for lots of women and young girls to know that you can go out there and do a good job in a man's world and take on all of that that comes with that," Cabot said. She added that she is proud to have helped open doors for other women entering the industry and expects that progress to continue.

Despite the back-and-forth, Shilo Sanders maintained his position during a subsequent Twitch appearance. He argued that his issue stemmed from how Cabot integrates opinion into her reporting, suggesting she has a bias against his brother.

On the field, the competition for the starting role remains active. Shedeur Sanders is currently competing with Watson and fellow second-year quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Browns coach Todd Monken addressed the internal competition on Saturday, noting that while a depth chart exists, every player on the roster is expected to compete for their spot during training camp.
