Trevon Diggs Released by Dallas Cowboys on Same Day News Breaks of Brother Stefon’s Charges

Cornerback Trevon Diggs is waived by the Cowboys. Simultaneously, news breaks of Stefon Diggs' legal battle in New England. Read more on these two breaking stories.

The NFL has long been a family affair, but for the Diggs brothers, Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025, will go down as a day of reckoning rather than celebration. In a sequence of events that felt more like a scripted drama than a sports news cycle, the Dallas Cowboys reportedly parted ways with star cornerback Trevon Diggs just as news broke that his older brother, Stefon Diggs, is facing felony charges in Massachusetts.

For years, Trevon and Stefon have been the gold standard for siblings in the league—stylishly dominant, culturally relevant, and seemingly untouchable. Now, as the calendar turns to 2026, both men find their careers and reputations at a sudden, jarring crossroads.

The release of Trevon Diggs is a move few would have predicted two years ago when Jerry Jones handed him a five-year, $97 million extension. At the time, Diggs was the ball-hawking king of the NFL, coming off an 11-interception season that tied a franchise record.

Since that massive payday, Trevon has been plagued by a string of bad luck and bizarre circumstances:

  • The Injury Bug: He has appeared in only 21 games over the past two seasons. From a torn ACL in 2023 to a chondral graft in early 2024, his knees have betrayed the elite lateral quickness that made him a Pro Bowler.
  • The "TV Mount" Incident: In one of the most unusual injury reports of the year, Diggs suffered a concussion this season after a television mounting pole fell on him while he was attempting a DIY home installation.
  • The Culture Clash: Tensions rose when Diggs chose to rehab his injuries in South Florida rather than under the supervision of the Cowboys' training staff. This decision cost him a $500,000 base salary bonus and reportedly soured his relationship with the front office.

With zero interceptions in the eight games he played this season and opposing quarterbacks posting a perfect passer rating when targeting him, the Cowboys decided the "culmination of events" was enough. By cutting him now, Dallas opens up roughly $12 million in cap space—a cold, business-first ending for a player who once seemed like the future of the franchise.

While Trevon is looking for a new job, his brother Stefon is looking for a way out of a legal firestorm. The New England Patriots wide receiver has been accused of felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery following a Dec. 2 incident at his home in Dedham, Massachusetts.

According to a police report, the alleged victim—a woman working as a personal chef for Diggs—claims the star receiver smacked her across the face and choked her with his elbow during a dispute over unpaid wages. Stefon's legal team, led by attorney David Meier, has "categorically denied" the allegations, calling them an attempt to gain leverage in a financial dispute.

The news adds a heavy layer of scrutiny to the receiver’s personal life, which has recently been a staple of tabloid headlines due to his high-profile relationship with Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B. The couple, who recently welcomed a son together, has been under the microscope after fans noticed them spending the Christmas holiday apart.

Stefon is due in court for arraignment on Jan. 23—a date that looms over a potential AFC Championship run for the Patriots.
