Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Streaks Past Wilt Chamberlain Record
If you didn’t know better, it might look like Wilt Chamberlain was under attack. Earlier this week, the Miami Heat’s Bam Adebayo got within 17 points of Chamberlain’s immortal single-game scoring record of 100 points. And before debate over how Adebayo was able to drop 83 on the tanking Washington Wizards could die down, another Chamberlain record actually fell.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dropped 35 points last night against the Boston Celtics, marking 127 straight regular-season games in which SGA scored at least 20 points. The Thunder beat the Celtics 104-102.
The last time the Oklahoma City Thunder guard scored fewer than 20 points in a regular-season game was Nov. 1, 2024. Chamberlain’s record started in 1961, the same season in which he scored 100 points while playing for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks. It ended on Jan. 19, 1963. The Warriors, who had relocated to San Francisco, were playing the St. Louis Hawks, when Chamberlain was ejected four minutes into the first quarter for allegedly using abusive language toward a referee while protesting a call. He had already scored six points.
It’s fitting that Gilgeous-Alexander broke a Chamberlain record that stood for 63 years because he’s on a historic stretch of his own. He’s averaged at least 30 points per game since the 2022-2023 season. He won the 2024-2025 regular season, Western Conference Finals, and NBA Finals MVP awards en route to capturing his and Oklahoma City’s first NBA championship; the franchise previously won a chip as the Seattle Supersonics before relocating.
Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder are on a seven-game win streak and in first place in the West, 3.5 games ahead of the second-place San Antonio Spurs. They next play the sixth-place Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday.
