Cardinals Name Jacoby Brissett Starter As Kyler Murray's Foot Injury Lingers
Jacoby Brissett has been named the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals for their upcoming game against the Seattle Seahawks, marking his fourth consecutive start.
According to EPSN, the decision is primarily due to Kyler Murray continuing to recover from a foot injury.
After the offcial announcement, Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon expressed confidence in Brissett's
"I do like what the offense is doing right now,” Gannon said.
"So, in my mind, I take all the variables that I have to make a decision and make the decision when I need to, and I think we're doing a pretty good job on offense," Gannon continued.. "I like what the offense is doing right now."
Gannon said his decision to name a starter six days before the Seahawks game was because of the "clarity that it provides game-planning for our team."
"I think that's important," the coach said.
In his starts, Brissett has been effective, helping the team break a losing streak with a victory over the Dallas Cowboys, and his play has averaged a higher point total for the offense. While the coach initially stated Murray would reclaim the starting job when fully healthy, Brissett's solid performance has created an ongoing discussion about the team's long-term quarterback plans.
Adam Schefter noted that Murray and “the team have consulted with multiple foot doctors about the injury and have been told a possible timetable for his recovery could be anywhere from four to eight weeks because of an increased likelihood of a setback unless it heals properly.”
Gannon said injuries "never" go how you think they will but that Murray is improving.
"He's doing well. He wants to be out there," Gannon said of Murray. "He's a competitor. I talked to him today, but he's a good teammate and he's working to get healthy."
This season has been marked by underperformance and uncertainty by Murarry. Through his five starts before an injury sidelined him, Murray struggled to produce the explosive passing plays he was known for, accumulating 962 yards, six touchdowns, and a below-average passer rating despite stable rushing numbers.
