Bryce Young Gets His Flowers: Panthers QB Leads Carolina to Brink of First Postseason Since Cam Newton Era

The Carolina Panthers (8-7) now lead the NFC South after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20. Here is how Bryce Young can clinch the Panthers’ first division title and home playoff game since 2015.

In a season defined by growth and grit, the Carolina Panthers took their biggest step toward the postseason in nearly a decade on Sunday. Behind a poised performance from second-year quarterback Bryce Young, the Panthers secured a 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Bank of America Stadium, moving into sole possession of first place in the NFC South.

The win improves Carolina to 8-7, giving them a one-game lead over the Buccaneers (7-8) with only two games remaining in the regular season. While the division crown has not yet been officially clinched, the Panthers are now on the verge of their first playoff appearance since 2017—the final year of the Cam Newton era—and are eyeing their first home playoff game since the 2015 Super Bowl run.

Young, the former No. 1 overall pick, showed why the franchise has placed its future in his hands. He finished the day 21-of-32 for 191 yards and two touchdowns, delivering strikes under pressure and maintaining his composure during a back-and-forth fourth quarter. His primary target, rookie Tetairoa McMillan, hauled in a critical 22-yard touchdown just before halftime to set the tone, while Young later found Ja’Tavion Sanders for a 6-yard score to regain the lead in the third.

The Panthers' defense, led by coordinator Ejiro Evero, rose to the occasion in the final moments. After rookie kicker Ryan Fitzgerald nailed a 48-yard field goal with 2:20 remaining to break a 20-20 tie, the defense faced a final charge from Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield. The threat ended when rookie safety Lathan Ransom intercepted Mayfield with 42 seconds left, effectively sealing the win and sending the Charlotte crowd into a frenzy.

The path forward is clear but challenging. To secure the division, the Panthers must navigate a Week 17 home matchup against the Seattle Seahawks before a regular-season finale in Tampa Bay. Because the Buccaneers hold various tiebreakers, Carolina likely needs to win one of its remaining two games—or see a Tampa Bay loss to Miami next week—to solidify their return to the postseason.

For a franchise that has spent years searching for its next identity, Sunday’s win served as a statement that the new era in Carolina has arrived.
