University of Iowa Basketball Player Accused of Fighting Bar Staff

New Hawkeye transfer Tavion Banks had been charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct.

Tavion Banks, a star basketball transfer for the University of Iowa, was arrested for his alleged involvement in a fight with staff at a local bar.

According to PEOPLE, Banks was arrested and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct at around 1:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, in Iowa City. The fight took place at ReUnion Brewery, a popular nightlife venue in close proximity to the university's campus.

Per the criminal complaint, Banks was alleged to have “smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot, watery eyes, and refused a preliminary breath test at the scene.”

Following the incident, the university issued an official statement addressing the matter.

"The UI Athletics Department and men’s basketball program are aware of Tavion Banks’ citation over the weekend," the school said. "He is subject to established university protocol regarding the UI Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, and the rules and regulations set for members of the men’s basketball program.”

Last year, Banks averaged 10.1 points and 5 rebounds for Drake. He was also named the Missouri Valley Conference's sixth man of the year.

A few days before he was arrested, Banks was honored by Kansas City LINC's athletics program for his work with children in his hometown. In response to the honor, Bank took to social media to show his appreciation.

"I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the LINC Program for supporting the youth. Your generosity and belief in the power of investing in young people truly means a lot,” his post read. “It’s inspiring to see an organization so committed to uplifting the next generation, and I’m grateful to have been able to partner with you in making a difference. Together, we’re not just providing resources — we’re opening doors and planting seeds for a brighter future. Thank you again for standing behind this effort."
