Pacers Rookie Kam Jones Arrested After Police Chase for Speeding

The second-round pick faces reckless driving and resisting law enforcement charges just before the NBA season tipped off.

Indiana Pacers rookie guard Kam Jones was arrested in Indianapolis after a brief police chase.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the incident occurred on Interstate 65 when a state trooper allegedly attempted to pull Jones over for erratic driving and speeding, reportedly clocking him at 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. Jones allegedly failed to comply, resulting in a brief pursuit. Eventually, he was subsequently taken into custody, where he faces preliminary charges of misdemeanor reckless driving and felony resisting law enforcement.

Court documents state that Jones told authorities he was unaware he was speeding and was running late for Pacers practice. The Pacers released a statement acknowledging the situation and stating they are gathering more information before commenting further.

“We are aware of the situation involving Kam Jones,” the Pacers said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering additional information and will not have any further comment on the matter at this time.”

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, Jones and Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle addressed the media, saying “it was nothing more than a speeding ticket.”

Jones followed Carlisle with an apology to his teammates and the organization.

“I’m deeply sorry to the Pacers organization and the fans. This was a pretty traumatic experience for me. I’ve never been through anything like this,” Jones said. “It won’t happen again. I’m deeply sorry to the organization. I’m looking forward to getting past this and getting back to work.”

Selected with the No. 38 overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Pacers earlier this year, Jones averaged 19.2 points and 5.9 assists per game as an All-American at Marquette. Jones led the Golden Eagles to the Sweet 16 in 2024, but they were knocked out of the tournament in the first round this past March.

Because of a lingering back injury,  Jones has not yet played for the Pacers.
