Shaq Graduates From LSU

The big man was back in Baton Rouge on Saturday morning to pick up his Master of Liberal Arts.

Shaquille O'Neal returned to the floor of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on Saturday morning, but this time it was not to throw down a dunk or secure a rebound. Instead, the former Louisiana State University basketball standout walked across the graduation stage to receive a Master of Liberal Arts degree.

O'Neal earned his graduate degree from the LSU College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The morning commencement ceremony took place in the very arena where his collegiate jersey hangs from the rafters and just steps away from his bronze statue, which was dedicated outside the building in September 2011.

Before building a highly successful business portfolio and transitioning into a prominent television analyst role covering the NBA on TNT and ESPN, O'Neal put together one of the most dominant collegiate basketball careers in history. He arrived in Baton Rouge for the 1989-1990 season and spent three years playing under head coach Dale Brown.

During his time with the Tigers, O'Neal established marks that remain near the top of the university record books. He finished his collegiate career ranking fifth in all-time scoring with 1,941 points and second in total rebounds with 1,217. His standout performance during the 1990-1991 campaign, in which he led the country in rebounding with 14.7 boards per game and averaged 27.6 points, earned him the Associated Press National Player of the Year award.

Following his junior season, O'Neal entered the 1992 NBA Draft, where the Orlando Magic selected him with the No. 1 overall pick. He went on to win multiple NBA championships throughout his professional playing career.

Despite leaving early for the professional ranks, O'Neal remained committed to finishing his education in Baton Rouge. He fulfilled a promise to his mother by returning to complete his bachelor's degree requirements, graduating from LSU in December 2000. The following night at a home basketball game, the university made him just the fourth player in program history to have his jersey number retired.

Saturday's graduation marks the latest academic achievement for the 54-year-old, who adds the master's degree to his extensive list of off-court endeavors
