Police Chasing 49ers Receiver Brandon Aiyuk Over Viral Video
The situation between San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and his franchise was already incredibly strained, but it has now spilled over into the legal system. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office confirmed that an active arrest warrant has been issued for the wideout following a traffic incident late last year.
County prosecutors filed a misdemeanor complaint against Aiyuk for exhibition of speed, which court documents show was executed on Feb. 11 and officially filed on Feb. 24. The charge stems directly from video evidence that Aiyuk filmed himself and uploaded to his personal YouTube channel. In the clip, the driver is seen operating a vehicle at speeds exceeding 100 mph on public roads in Santa Clara, passing right by the team's home field, Levi's Stadium.
Aiyuk eventually deleted the video and posted an apology to his followers on social media, writing that his automotive content would no longer feature speeding. However, the online apology did not stop local authorities from stepping in. The Santa Clara Police Department launched a full investigation into the footage and forwarded the case file to the district attorney's office on Jan. 15, resulting in the misdemeanor warrant.
This off-field hurdle comes at a time when Aiyuk's professional career is at a standstill. Selected 25th overall by San Francisco in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Arizona State standout spent his first four seasons developing into one of quarterback Brock Purdy's most dependable options. In 69 career games, Aiyuk recorded 294 receptions for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns.
That production led to a highly publicized summer contract standoff in 2024, where Aiyuk held out of training camp amid trade rumors involving the Pittsburgh Steelers. He ultimately signed a massive four-year, $120 million extension with the 49ers, but managed to play only seven games under the new deal before suffering a severe knee injury, tearing both his ACL and MCL.
Aiyuk sat out the entire 2025 season while rehabilitating, a period defined by a rapid deterioration of his relationship with team management. The front office voided the 2026 financial guarantees remaining on his contract after alleging he missed required team meetings and rehab obligations. On Dec. 13, San Francisco placed him on the reserve/left squad list, ending his season. The speeding incident near the stadium occurred just one week later.
Rumors have consistently tied him to the Washington Commanders, where his former college quarterback teammate Jayden Daniels plays, and where general manager Adam Peters runs the front office after previously working in San Francisco.
While Aiyuk navigates mounting legal complications and trade discussions, the 49ers continue their voluntary offseason program, with mandatory minicamp scheduled to begin on June 9.
