Napheesa Collier Cancels Meeting With WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert

The WNBPA Vice President nixes talks with Engelbert after the Commissioner denies making comments on Caitlin Clark and player compensation.

After her exit meeting with the Minnesota Lynx, where she claimed that the WNBA has “the worst leadership in the world,”  Napheesa Collier has canceled an upcoming meeting with WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

According to ESPN, Collier was open to meeting with Engelbert but reportedly changed her mind after the Commissioner denied making controversial statements about players.

On Friday, Engelbert denied making comments that Caitlin Clark and other young stars of the league "should be on their knees" in gratitude because of the platform the league has given them.”

Napheesa Collier Blasts WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert

“I did not make those comments," Engelbert said at her annual news conference ahead of Game 1 of the WNBA Finals.

"There is a lot of inaccuracy out there through social media and all of this reporting," Engelbert added. "I highly respect the players. There is a lot of emotion and passion going on right now between collective bargaining. ... I am obviously disheartened."

Engelbert also acknowledged that “there is a lot of work for her to do to rebuild trust with the players, but was confident she would be able to do so.”

At the press conference, Collier pulled no punches in her critique of Engelbert and the WNBA executive leadership.

“The league has a buzzword that they rolled out as a talking point for the CBA as to why they can't pay the players what we're worth; that word is sustainability. But what's truly unsustainable is keeping a good product on the floor while allowing officials to lose control of games,” Collier said. “Fans see it every night. Coaches, both winning and losing, point it out every night in pre- and post-game media. And leadership just issues fines and looks the other way.”

Collier also noted that the players' demands for better officiating have been ignored.

“At Unrivaled this past February, I sat across from Cathy and asked how she planned to address the officiating issues in our league. Her response was, 'Well, only the losers complain about the refs, ' Collier continued.
