Jonathan Kuminga Turns Down New Warriors Deal

After reportedly rejecting the Warriors' latest multi-million dollar extension offer, the 22-year old emerging star has stalled the team's offseason plans.

The standoff between Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors continues as the 22-year-old forward turned down the team’s latest contract extension offer.

According to CBS Sports, the Warriors recently agreed to add a third year to their offer, but Kuminga walked away from the deal because of a team option.

ESPN's Shams Charania and Anthony Slater reported that the Warriors upped their offer to three years, $75.2 million -- from two years, $45 million -- but insisted on the final year being a team option. Without a team option, Golden State reportedly offered Kuminga a three-year, $54 million deal.

Kuminga's camp reportedly won't budge on a team option unless “the annual figure is closer to $30 million and would be willing to go as low as $20 million annually to get a player option in the final year of the deal.” In a compromise, the Warriors would offer a one-year deal that increased the $8 million qualifying offer and get him to unrestricted free agency next summer, if he waived his no-trade clause, which would allow the Warriors to trade him at the deadline.

According to multiple reports, both the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings had offered deals to Kuminga but were turned down by Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Drafted by the Golden State Warriors as the 7th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. Kuminga has played four seasons with the team, winning an NBA championship in 2022 during his rookie season.  In his 2023-2024 season, he averaged a career-high 16.1 points per game. Throughout his career, he’s averaged 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and is regarded as one of the rising stars in the league.

Despite his talent, Kuminga's desire for a larger role on the team clashed with head coach Steve Kerr's philosophy, leading to public criticisms and DNP's in the playoffs last year.
