Phoenix Mercury Advance to Finals; Las Vegas Aces-Indiana Fever Series Tied 2-2

With the Mercury punching their ticket to the Finals, they await the winner of Game 5 between the Aces and Fever.

The Phoenix Mercury are on their way to the WNBA Finals.

On Sunday, the Mercury came back from a 14-point deficit to eliminate the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx with an 86-81 victory. It will be Mercury’s first WNBA Finals appearance since 2021.

Once again, Alyssa Thomas was dominant and almost had another triple-double. She scored 23 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out 10 assists. Satou Sabally added 21 points, and DeWanna Bonner contributed 13 points from off the bench.

“It took everybody. Everybody on this team," Thomas said during her postgame interview on ESPN. "We are hungry. We are ready for this moment, and I'm just super proud of how we fought today."

“It's us versus everybody all season long," Sabally added. "Champions win these games, and we did that."

In Game 3 on Friday, Lynx star Napheesa Collier was injured in a play involving Alyssa Thomas, who pulled off the game-winning steal and score. Collier was forced to miss Sunday's deciding game, along with Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, who was suspended after getting ejected Friday and was highly critical of the officials during her postgame news conference.

The Mercury will take on the winner of the Aces vs. Fever series in the Finals, which starts Friday, Oct. 3. The Mercury are seeking their fourth WNBA title, which would tie them with the Lynx, Storm, and Comets for the most in league history.

On the brink of elimination, the Indiana Fever defeated the Las Vegas Aces 90-83  to set up a winner-take-all Game 5.

The Fever controlled the game from the tip-off, with incredible performances from Aliyah Boston, who scored 24 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assists. Boston and Fever legend Tamika Catchings are the only Fever players to record 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists in a playoff game.

"We've watched a lot of film," Boston said after her big game, "and I think for me, just working on my positioning, trying to get earlier seals, that was the focus for me tonight."

Kelsey Mitchell added 25 points, and Odyssey Sims scored 18 points.

"I think we were the aggressor," Fever coach Stephanie White said. "And usually when we're aggressive and we move the ball, good things happen for us. We attacked, we played with a sense of urgency. We made the right reads and the right plays."

For the Aces, A'ja Wilson, this year's MVP, scored 31 points, but it wasn’t enough to offset the Aces' 17 turnovers, which led to 25 points for the Fever.

"We know what we're supposed to be doing for sure," Aces coach Becky Hammon said. "This is Game 4, but you still have to come out there, and our pickup points always tell me kind of where we're going to be at, and they were not good."

Game 5 is scheduled for Tuesday night back in Las Vegas.
