Atlanta Hawks’ ‘Magic City Monday’ Promo Gets Shade From Two Non-ATL Players
The words Magic City conjure images of ATL, just like tasting lemon pepper wings or hearing OutKast’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. After all, the famous strip club sits, tellingly, between an I-20 off-ramp into downtown Atlanta and a Greyhound Bus depot, but also a short walk from Atlanta City Hall. It’s so integral to the city’s lure for Black athletes and entertainers that it has a Starz documentary.
The Atlanta Hawks know this, and rather than ignoring it, decided to lean in by setting up a Magic City Monday promotion for the team’s March 16 home game against the Orlando Magic, complete with a planned TI performance, a limited-edition hoodie, and…lemon pepper wings.
But not everybody in the NBA is onboard. San Antonio Spurs Center Luke Kornet took to his Medium account to ask the Hawks to reconsider.
“I would like to respectfully ask that the Atlanta Hawks cancel this promotional night with Magic City,” he wrote.
“The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world. We should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love. Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society.”
Golden State Warriors center Al Horford, who was drafted by the Hawks and played nine seasons in Atlanta, agreed from his X account.
The Hawks say they don’t intend to change their plans.
