Can Prairie View A&M Stun Defending Champion Gators?
The 16th-seeded Prairie View A&M Panthers are walking into Benchmark International Arena tonight as the biggest underdogs in NCAA Tournament history. After taking down Lehigh 67–55 in Wednesday’s First Four, the Panthers secured the first NCAA Tournament victory in school history. Now, the reward is a betting public that believes they’ll lose by at least 35.5 points to the defending national champion and top-seeded Florida Gators.
However, head coach Byron Smith has his squad playing its best basketball of the year. Prairie View A&M has rattled off eight straight wins, fueled by a relentless defensive identity often described as "forty minutes of hell."
To keep things competitive, the Panthers will rely heavily on senior guard Dontae Horne. The playmaker has been the engine of the offense, averaging over 20 points per game, and will need to navigate a Florida defense that ranks among the best in the country. Helping him lead the charge is Cory Wells, whose interior presence will be vital against a massive Florida front court.
The challenge for Prairie View lies in the paint. Florida leads the nation in rebounding, grabbing nearly 60% of available boards. Junior forward Alex Condon, who averages 15 points and nearly eight rebounds, is expected to be a focal point for the Gators. Florida also features 6-foot-11 center Rueben Chinyelu, a defensive anchor who makes scoring inside a nightmare for opponents.
Despite the height disadvantage, the Panthers have a statistical edge that could keep them in the hunt. Their interior defense has tightened significantly during this win streak, ranking 81st nationally in opponent two-point field goal percentage. If they can force the Gators, who have struggled from beyond the arc this season, to rely on perimeter shooting, Prairie View could slow the game down and disrupt Florida’s rhythm.
With tipoff set for 9:25 p.m. ET on TNT, all eyes will be on Tampa to see if the SWAC champions can turn the "Big Dance" into a historic upset or if the Gators will start their title defense with a statement.
