Bucks and Knicks Engaged in Trade Talks For Giannis Antetokounmpo
During the offseason the Milwaukee Bucks were reportedly contacted by the New York Knicks for the services of Giannis Antetokounmpo. The reports suggest that the two-time MVP and NBA champion may seek greener pastures if the Bucks are not title contenders.
According to ESPN, the conversations were sparked when Antetokounmpo's interest to explore options outside of Milwaukee in pursuit of another championship ring.
Shams Charania reported that the Bucks told the Knicks “that they preferred not to move Antetokounmpo.” Since the news became public, many have speculated that New York’s offer was not strong enough and the trades discussion came to an end.
Wen Knicks head coach Mike Brown was asked about the potential trade by reporters, he dismissed the speculation and chose to put the focus on his current roster.
“I don’t get into that stuff. We’re in a great spot right now,” Brown said. “Our guys, they’re playing their tails off. They’re starting to pick up what we’re doing defensively. Offensively, we’re getting a little bit more comfortable, especially trying to play fast. That’s what I’m concentrating on now. Like I said, I love our guys and I think they’re starting to enjoy playing the way we’re trying to play on both ends.”
During the Bucks Media Day, Antetokounmpo stated that his focus is to win another championship.
"The same thing I’ve been saying my whole career – I want to be on a team that allows me, gives me a chance to win a championship and wants to compete at a high level," Antetokounmpo said.
“I think it’s a disservice to basketball, it’s a disservice just to the game to not want to compete at a high level, to not want your season to end in April. So, it’s pretty much the same,” he continued. “It’s not the first time. I had the same thoughts last year, I had the same thoughts two years ago, I had the same thoughts five years ago – yeah, 2020 – so it’s never gonna change. I want to be among the best, I want to compete with the best, and I want to win another championship and that’s it.”
As of yet, Antetokounmpo has not requested to be traded and league sources have reported that Bucks have no interest in trading their franchise player.
