Russell Wilson Weighs Jets Backup Role Against Sports Media Future

After a stint with the Giants, the veteran signal-caller could stay in New York to provide veteran leadership behind Geno Smith.

Russell Wilson is at a career crossroads that could either lead him back to the huddle or into a television studio. The veteran quarterback confirmed Wednesday that he is currently evaluating a contract offer from the New York Jets while simultaneously weighing interest from major networks for a broadcasting career.

Wilson, 37, discussed his future during an appearance at the BTIG Charity Day in New York. According to the New York Post, which first reported the news, the Super Bowl champion met with the Jets last week to discuss a veteran backup role behind starter Geno Smith.

"It was great," Wilson told the New York Post. "They offered me, and I'm trying to figure out what the next best thing is for me to do. I still know I can play ball at a high level, but I also have the opportunity to do TV, so we'll see what happens."

While the Jets provide a chance to remain in uniform, The Athletic previously reported that Wilson has been in talks with CBS Sports about a potential role as an NFL studio analyst.

The Jets' interest in Wilson comes as the team looks to stabilize a young quarterback room. Outside of Smith, the current depth chart includes Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook, and rookie Cade Klubnik. Between them, Zappe and Cook have only 13 starts in the league. Adding Wilson would provide a championship pedigree to the roster, though any potential deal would likely be for less than half of the $10.5 million he earned last year with the New York Giants.

A move to the Jets would reunite Wilson with Smith, his former teammate of three seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. The Jets reportedly sought Smith’s perspective on adding a veteran to the room, and the starter offered a positive endorsement of his former mentor.
