Tupac Shakur’s Baltimore History Honored With Custom Orioles Bobblehead
The Baltimore Orioles announced that the first 15,000 fans attending the May 8 matchup against the Athletics will receive a special Tupac Shakur bobblehead.
The promotional item commemorates the late rapper’s ties to the city. Shakur moved from the Bronx to Baltimore in November 1985 at the age of 14. He attended local schools for three years before relocating to Marin City, California, in 1988.
The bobblehead depicts the hip-hop legend wearing a black bandana and a Baltimore Orioles uniform, holding a baseball bat.
Shakur’s time in Baltimore included enrollment at Roland Park Middle School and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. He eventually auditioned for the Baltimore School for the Arts as a theater major, where his studies included acting, poetry, jazz, and ballet. During his time at the school, he became friends with fellow student Jada Pinkett Smith.
The city also served as the backdrop for the early stages of his music career. In November 1985, Shakur and Dana Smith won a youth rap contest held at the Enoch Pratt Free Library. Shakur authored their entry, "Library Rap," on lined notebook paper. That manuscript is now preserved in the library’s special collections archive, housed alongside the works of notable Baltimore writers H.L. Mencken and Edgar Allan Poe.
Widely recognized as one of the most influential lyricists in music history, Shakur became the first solo hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. He died in 1996 following a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.
The giveaway will take place at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in downtown Baltimore.
