Attorney For Deandre Ayton Clarifies Marijuana Search Following Airport Incident
Deandre Ayton found himself in a brief standoff with law enforcement in his home country this week. The Los Angeles Lakers starting center was temporarily detained at Lynden Pindling International Airport in the Bahamas as authorities searched his belongings for marijuana.
According to TMZ Sports, which first broke the news, the Central Division of the Royal Bahamas Police Force initiated the search after the 27-year-old was allegedly seen smoking on the airport premises. However, when reached by the outlet Tuesday evening, his attorney, Devard Francis, painted a much different picture of the encounter.
Francis told TMZ that while his client was held for a short period, the search of his personal items yielded no illegal substances and no charges were filed. The attorney further clarified that investigators eventually determined that a small amount of marijuana was found in a bag belonging to someone else. Following the clarification, the 7-footer was released "expeditiously" and cleared to continue his travel.
The incident comes during the NBA All-Star break, a period typically reserved for rest and recovery. Ayton was born in Nassau, the Bahamas in 1998 before moving to southern California to play high school basketball. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft has had a journeyman’s path recently, moving from the Phoenix Suns to the Portland Trail Blazers before landing in Los Angeles this past summer.
As the Lakers prepare for the second half of the season, the team will look for their starting center to remain a focal point in the paint. He has averaged a solid 13.2 points and 8.5 rebounds through 46 games this season. With no legal hurdles remaining from the airport encounter, Francis confirmed that Ayton is on his way back to Los Angeles to rejoin his teammates as scheduled.
