Dawn Staley Explains Why the NBA Isn't Ready for a Woman Head Coach
Dawn Staley highly doubts that a woman will be hired to coach an NBA team.
Over the summer, Staley, South Carolina women’s basketball coach, interviewed for the New York Knicks coaching vacancy, which ultimately went to Mike Brown. After the experience, the three-time national champion revealed that she doesn’t believe a woman will get a shot to coach in the NBA during her lifetime.
“No, I don't [believe it will happen in my lifetime]," Staley said during SEC media day on Tuesday. "And I hope I'm wrong."
According to Staley, women would face intense scrutiny that would center on their gender and not just their coaching performance.
“If the Knicks have a five-game losing streak, it's not going to be about the losing streak," said the Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer. "It's going to be about being a female coach. So you, as an organization, a franchise, you have to be prepared for and strong enough to ignore those types of instances when you're going to look to hire a female coach."
Although she can’t see an NBA team hiring a woman, Staley shared that going through the process with the Knicks opened her eyes to how the league works. Also, she hopes what she learned can help women who interview for open positions in the future.
"If there is somebody that is interested in knowing and interested in being the first female NBA coach, I've got all the information," Staley said. "Come see me, because I'll get you prepared for the interview.”
"And if there are NBA franchises that are interested in hiring a female, I'm here, too, because you've got to be ready to take that on and all the things that it comes with because it's not just about hiring the first female coach,” Staley continued.
With college basketball around the corner, Staley's Gamecocks are ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll, trailing defending champion UConn.
