Milwaukee Ships Giannis To The Heat In Blockbuster Trade

The multi-time Defensive Player of the Year forced his way out of Wisconsin to pair up with Bam Adebayo.

The long-running standoff between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks has come to an end. Milwaukee has agreed to send the two-time Most Valuable Player and forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in exchange for a substantial package of players and draft capital, sources told ESPN.

In return for its franchise cornerstone, Milwaukee receives Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis. The deal also includes three first-round draft picks, featuring the No. 13 selection in Tuesday's NBA draft, a 2030 pick swap and a 2033 second-round selection. The unprotected first-round picks heading to the Bucks are scheduled for 2031 and 2033. The transaction will be processed on July 6, maintaining a clean one-to-one framework between the two franchises while leaving room for potential adjustments before the final paperwork is filed.

Heat president Pat Riley adds another marquee name to his long history of major acquisitions in South Florida, placing Antetokounmpo alongside center Bam Adebayo to anchor Miami's postseason aspirations in the Eastern Conference.

The deal concludes a tense 13-month period behind the scenes in Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo and his agent, Alex Saratsis, repeatedly informed the front office that he desired a change of scenery and would not sign a long-term extension. Though general manager Jon Horst tried to preserve the relationship—even extending Damian Lillard's contract last summer to bring in center Myles Turner—the team struggled on the court. Milwaukee finished the season 32-50 and missed the postseason entirely, fueling the star forward's desire to find a new home where he could chase a second championship ring.

The Boston Celtics heavily pursued Antetokounmpo as well, with team president Brad Stevens offering a package built around 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and two draft picks. However, Milwaukee preferred the depth and long-term financial flexibility of Miami's offer as new head coach Taylor Jenkins prepares to rebuild the roster.

Antetokounmpo leaves Milwaukee after 13 seasons, highlighted by the 2021 NBA championship. Injuries limited him to a career-low 36 games last year, during which he averaged 27.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. He now joins a Miami squad looking to rebound under head coach Erik Spoelstra after missing the playoffs last spring.
