Wrigley Field To Host Historic First Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic

Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Cubs organization announce a free event to showcase the next generation of Black baseball talent.

Wrigley Field is synonymous with baseball history, but this spring, the "Friendly Confines" will add a new chapter to its legacy. On May 2, the ballpark will host the inaugural Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic, marking the first time Historically Black Colleges and Universities will compete on the storied field. The matchup features a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game between Prairie View A&M University and Alabama A&M University.

This is a sanctioned conference game played under the lights following the conclusion of a Chicago Cubs afternoon contest. The choice of venue carries historical weight, as Wrigley Field is the only remaining ballpark where Jackie Robinson played during his career. This connection links the era of MLB integration to the modern landscape of Black collegiate sports.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed the significance of the event, stating that the game is a milestone for the city and the future of the sport. He noted that the event honors the history of African-Americans in baseball while aiming to inspire young people in higher education and leadership. When Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947, his games at Wrigley Field drew record-breaking, racially diverse crowds that impacted the city’s civil rights history.

The ballpark also has ties to the Negro Leagues, having hosted games during the era of segregation. Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts characterized the upcoming Classic as a historic event for the franchise.

The initiative is modeled after the cultural impact of HBCU football classics, bringing that environment to a professional baseball setting. The game is free to the public, though tickets are required for entry. Interested attendees can secure tickets through the official Chicago Cubs website.
