Michael Jordan Blast the NBA’s Load Management Policies

The NBA legend says players have an obligation to perform for fans who’ve paid to come to the games.

When it comes to NBA opinions, few hold as much weight as Michael Jordan’s.

On “Insights Into Excellence,” Jordan’s half-time segment of the “NBA on NBC’s” Tuesday broadcast, the Hall of Famer shared his thoughts on load management, which is the practice of players sitting out games so that they can rest, in today's NBA.

“It shouldn’t be needed,” Jordan said. “I never wanted to miss a game because it was an opportunity to prove. The fans are there to watch me play. I want to impress that guy, way up on top, who probably worked his ass off to get a ticket.”

Jordan also said that he felt obligated to quiet his naysayers in the crowd.

"Yeah, because I know he's probably yelling at me and I want to shut him up," Jordan said. "You know, he's calling me all kinds of names. I definitely want to shut him up. ... You have a duty that if they're wanting to see you, and as an entertainer, I want to show. Right?”

While Jordan understands that players must sit out due to injuries, he can not endorse healthy players not suiting up because they are resting.

“Physically, if I can do it and just don’t feel like doing it, that’s a whole different lens,” Jordan said.

Along with his dominance on the court, Jordan was remarkably durable throughout his career. According to The Athletic, Jordan played in all 82 regular-season games nine times in 15 seasons, which includes his final season with the Washington Wizards at age 39.

Most notably, Jordan played sick in the playoffs in the classic “Flu Game.” After suffering a stomach ailment, Jordan scored 38 points to help defeat the Utah Jazz 90-88 in the 1997 NBA Finals
