Is a Giants Reunion Locked In? OBJ Back In New York For Monday Workout

The former first-round pick didn't hide his desire to return to East Rutherford, admitting he never wanted to leave the franchise in the first place.

Odell Beckham Jr. might actually be pulling off a homecoming. The free-agent wide receiver was back in East Rutherford on Monday morning, working out for the New York Giants. The team needed to move fast after losing wideout and return man Gunner Olszewski to a torn right Achilles tendon on Friday.

This isn't the first time Beckham has linked up with his old team recently. He actually had a physical and workout back in April, but things took a more serious turn over the weekend. Beckham was in town for linebacker Brian Burns' charity softball game, and he didn't hide his desire to get back in a Giants uniform.

Beckham admitted to The New York Post that he never really wanted to leave New York in the first place, calling it a special place in his heart. After sitting out the entire 2024 season following a six-game suspension for PEDs, the 33-year-old receiver said his time away made him realize he left some things unfinished with the franchise. When asked whether he still has that juice on the field, he simply replied that we would find out soon.

If he does sign, he will be playing for a very familiar face. Current Giants head coach John Harbaugh coached Beckham in Baltimore back in 2023. Harbaugh has openly called Beckham one of his favorite people, and while he mentioned earlier this spring that the team might wait until summer camp to make a move, the current injury bug changed the timeline. Right now, the Giants are already thin at the position with Malik Nabers dealing with a knee issue and Darius Slayton sidelined by a core muscle injury.

That being said, a reunion isn't a done deal just yet. The Giants brought in some serious competition for Monday's workout, focusing on guys with a history with the coaching staff or extensive special-teams experience.

JuJu Smith-Schuster was out there running routes, too. The 29-year-old wideout has a Pro Bowl on his resume and plenty of big-game experience with the Steelers, Patriots, and Chiefs. He also spent time with Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy in Kansas City, so he already knows the system. Over his career, Smith-Schuster has racked up 481 catches and 33 touchdowns.

Braxton Berrios was also in the building, and he might be the truest replacement for Olszewski's return duties. Berrios was a first-team All-Pro returner with the Jets back in 2021 and spent last season with the Texans. With 100 career punt returns and nearly 100 kickoff returns under his belt, his special teams value is a massive selling point.

Anthony Miller rounded out the Monday tryout group. Like Beckham, Miller spent the last two seasons with Harbaugh in Baltimore. He also has a history with Nagy, having played under him in 2020, when Nagy was running the show for the Chicago Bears. Miller has 12 career touchdowns and can contribute on special teams if needed.
