HBCU Excellence: DeSean Jackson Secures Long-Term Deal After Revitalizing Delaware State Football

After leading the Hornets to their best finish in nearly 20 years, Delaware State University has locked in head coach DeSean Jackson through 2028. See how the NFL legend transformed the program.

Just one year after taking a leap of faith into the world of coaching, DeSean Jackson has secured his future at Delaware State University.

The University announced a contract extension for the former NFL star through 2028, rewarding Jackson for orchestrating the program’s most successful season in nearly two decades. The move signals a long-term commitment between Jackson and the Hornets as the school undergoes a massive $125 million athletic transformation.

Jackson’s debut season was nothing short of historic. Inheriting a program that won just two games in each of the previous two seasons and hadn't seen a winning record since 2012, Jackson led the Hornets to an 8-4 finish (4-1 in the MEAC). Under his guidance, Delaware State became a powerhouse on the ground, leading the FCS in rushing and reaching the MEAC championship game.

“Just two days before Christmas last year, I began the next phase of my professional career, as a first-time head coach, in a community I did not know, with players I did not recruit,” Jackson said. “Giving my whole self to these young men and representing one of the best Historically Black Colleges in the country has been a high honor.”

The "Jackson Effect" extended far beyond the win-loss column. Leveraging his legendary status with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jackson helped coordinate the "Battle of Legends" at Lincoln Financial Field. The October matchup against a Michael Vick-led Norfolk State squad drew 47,000 fans and generated over 24 million media impressions, including broadcasts from ESPN’s First Take and Good Morning America.

University President Tony Allen emphasized that Jackson is a key pillar in a broader vision for the top-tier HBCU. The school's $125 million initiative includes a new indoor training facility, a revamped stadium, and a new convocation center.

“Coach Jackson understands that vision and is helping us carry that message around the world,” Allen said.

On the field, Jackson’s staff developed elite talent, including MEAC rushing leader Marquis Gillis (1,197 yards) and HBCU Impact Player of the Year James Jones. They were joined on the All-MEAC First Team by offensive linemen Jestus Johnson and Isaiah Cook, along with linebacker Brian Bates.

While the Hornets fell just short of a Celebration Bowl berth after a loss to South Carolina State, Jackson is focused on the next step.

“We have some unfinished business to take care of on the field,” Jackson said. “I am proud to be a part of the athletic transformation taking place at the school.”
