New York Jets Cornerback Kris Boyd Shot, Critically Injured In New York

NYPD says 29-year-old was struck in the abdomen outside West 38th street restaurant.

Cornerback Kris Boyd of the New York Jets remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition after being shot early Sunday morning in Midtown Manhattan. The New York Police Department told ESPN, the 29-year-old was struck in the abdomen at about 2 a.m. outside an Asian-fusion restaurant on West 38th Street.

Boyd was rushed by emergency medical responders to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed as critical but stable. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

New York law enforcement sources told the New York Post, the shooting followed a verbal dispute that turned violent when the victim was leaving the restaurant. Surveillance video released by the police shows a male suspect last seen wearing a black cap, black sweatshirt, black pants and multicolored sneakers, carrying a black backpack and fleeing the scene on foot.

This season was Boyd’s first year with the Jets, having signed a one-year deal in March. However, he never appeared in a game after sustaining a shoulder injury during training camp and being placed on injured reserve in August.

Originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Boyd spent four seasons in Minnesota before stints with the Arizona Cardinals and the Houston Texans, where he earned a reputation as a special teams contributor.

The Jets issued a statement saying they “are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.”

In the wake of the shooting, a wave of support has come from Boyd’s teammates and league officials on social media.

Investigators continue to search for the suspect and the motive remains under investigation. Boyd’s status and long-term recovery remain uncertain. Police are working to identify the shooter and gather additional video evidence. The shooting casts a spotlight on gun-violence concerns in New York City and within the NFL community.
