Sha'Carri Richardson Arrested For Domestic Violence at Seattle Airport
Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested over the weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman, at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
According to the Associated Press, the Olympic gold medalist was detained by law enforcement last Sunday on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense and was booked into the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, at 6:54 p.m. She was released Monday at 1:13 p.m.
Per the report, an officer at the airport was notified by a Transportation Security Administration supervisor of a domestic disturbance between Richardson and Coleman.
Surveillance footage of the alleged incident shows Richardson grabbing Coleman’s backpack and yanking it away. As Coleman attempted to step around her, Richardson got in Coleman's way. She then shoved Coleman into a wall.
The report states that Richardson appeared to throw an item at Coleman, which may have been headphones, according to TSA.
Following the incident, Coleman declined to press charges.
“I was told Coleman did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim,” the police report said.
On Sunday (August 3), Coleman came out in support of Richardson as he attempted to put the incident behind him.
“I feel like it was just a sucky situation all around,” Coleman, 29, said. “I don’t feel as if she should have been arrested.”
“She’s a human being and a great person,” Coleman said. “And I feel like we’ve been able to be really good teammates like all year. … And she’s, to me, the best female athlete in the world. I see it every day.”
Although she has an automatic berth in the 100m as the defending world champion, Richardson failed to qualify for the 200m at the World Championships in September by one-hundredth of a second.
