Travis Hunter Baptized Hours Before Jaguars Kickoff
Travis Hunter is known for being a busy man. The Heisman trophy winner currently plays offense and defense for the Jacksonville Jaguars. But he stepped it up another level when he got baptized right before the Jaguars game against the Seattle Seahawks.
According to ESPN, Hunter was baptized at the Celebration Church in Jacksonville, Florida, a few hours before the game.
Hunter said that he was planning to get baptized and felt that the timing was right.
“I’ve been planning to go get baptized for a minute. I changed my life over to become a better man,” Hunters said. It means a lot. I’m becoming a better man and leaving my old self and starting a new chapter.”
After the service, the Jaguars fell to the Seahawks 20-12. Hunter caught four passes for 15 yards and had two tackles on defense as the Jaguars fell to 4-2 on the season.
When the news broke about his baptism, some pundits did not like the idea of Hunter going to church before a big game, namely, Skip Bayless.
“Allow me to tell you why there was no way Travis Hunter should have chosen to be baptized on the morning of a 1 o’clock game in Jacksonville… I’m certainly not suggesting that getting baptized was any kind of protest on Travis’ part,” Bayless argued. “ It was just a stunning indication of where his head is at, or not at, right now. He’s really not into football right now,” Bayless said.
“Travis Hunter is starting to lose interest. He’s starting to check out mentally on the Jags, so he was actually happy to be baptized on a gameday morning. Because football isn’t taking that much concentration,” the former FS1 personality continued. Or focus, or pre-game mental preparation. Nope, not now.”
Robert Griffin III came out in defense of Hunter, saying Bayless needed to get baptized to “wash away all his bad takes.”
“Travis Hunter just got baptized and Skip Bayless is tripping about it…Questioning Travis Hunter’s focus and dedication to his team because he gave his life to God through baptism is not analysis,” Griffin wrote on X. “It’s arrogance. A man finding salvation doesn’t need your approval. There’s never a wrong time to dedicate your life to God. Maybe instead of critiquing baptisms, you should try one. It might wash away all those bad takes.”
