Browns' Commitment to Shedeur Sanders Solidifies; Can Rookie QB Pass the Titans' Test?

Head Coach Kevin Stefanski confirms Sanders' third start, framing the Titans matchup as a crucial evaluation of the rookie QB's developmental progress.

The journey of a franchise quarterback is rarely linear, and rookie Shedeur Sanders’ first two NFL starts for the Cleveland Browns have been a master class in this dichotomy. Following an encouraging victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12, the team’s challenging 26-8 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers served as a necessary reality check.

“I just gotta be better overall. I gotta be able to rally everybody together when adversity is hitting,” said Sanders after the game

However, Head Coach Kevin Stefanski’s immediate confirmation that Sanders will start his third consecutive game in Week 14 against the Tennessee Titans frames this upcoming contest not as a continuation, but as a critical inflection point in the young player's professional evaluation.

The 49ers contest presented a clear analysis of the rookie’s ceiling and his current operational floor. Sanders demonstrated impressive pocket poise and accuracy in the first half, completing 8-of-11 passes and delivering a 34-yard touchdown strike to Harold Fannin Jr. But the second half exposed the steep learning curve required in the NFL: opponent adjustments, compounded by collective execution errors, shut down the offense entirely. Sanders went 8-of-14 for just 53 yards after halftime, illustrating the mental and physical endurance required to maintain high-level play for four quarters.

The fifth-round pick’s ability to win his debut earned him trust; his performance against a top-tier defense confirmed his developmental status. The Titans game provides the first true opportunity for Sanders to demonstrate integration—to show he can internalize lessons from failure and translate that growth onto the field within days, not weeks.

For the Browns organization, this commitment solidifies their long-term developmental strategy, particularly concerning a Black quarterback who arrived with high expectations and intense media scrutiny. The next start is less about the final score and more about the process: Can Sanders minimize the mental errors, accelerate his reads, and prove that his development is trending upward? The answer against Tennessee will define his trajectory for the rest of the season.
